「まつり」は日本国内であっても地域や季節、目的が違えばそれは全く異なるものになる。ただ共通しているのは人々が活力に満ち、賑わい、結びつきを強めることができるということではないだろうか。形式や言語は異なっても「まつり」は日本特有のものではなく、世界中でその社会に生きる人々にエンターテインメントとして、文化として息づいているものである。

 

今回は早稲田大学在学中の3人の外国出身の生徒にそれぞれ自分の国の「まつり」、そして早稲田祭についてのインタビューを行った。自国で学園祭を経験したことのある生徒には自国での学園祭と早稲田祭を中心に自国で経験した「まつり」と早稲田祭を比較し、文化的な違いについて述べていただいた。自国で学園祭を経験したことのない生徒にも早稲田祭について自身が感じたこと、そして文化的な背景について考察していただいた。

Have you had an experience of school festival in your own country?

• Yes, in high school. But I’d rather say it is more like a carnival.

 

How is it like a carnival?

• Basically, the festival is for charity, I think usually all school festivals have some goals to raise money. Sometimes there is a magic show too. The scale of festival is really big.

 

Can you get something to eat there?

• Yeah, popcorn is really popular, and maybe ice cream too.

 

How are Waseda festival and the festival in your own country different? Are there any kind of cultural differences between two festivals?

• There are a lot of foods at Waseda festival, and they have the specific timing for performances. Also the classrooms are very Japanese. You go to different classroom and they have different Club or whatever for each. Some cafe, like made cafe, that is really Japanese. Other countries don’t have that.

 

Are you going to join Waseda festival in this year?

• I’m not really sure. But I went to see “SesSion” performance last year, so I might go see again.

Have you had an experience of school festival in your own country?

• Yes, in my high school.  It was to promote student activity, because our high school has a lot of clubs. So, it was more like an opportunity to perform what they have done.

I feel like it sounds very similar from Japanese high school festival. Do the students earn money?

• I have not done those kind of cafe, but I have done fund raising which other classes also done that. I sell drink or snacks, it is sometimes to earn money.

 

Are you going to join Waseda festival in this year?

• I am not really sure. Because I am not belong to any circle. So, I might just go and have fun there.

 

Are there any kind of cultural differences between two festivals?

• When I compare two countries university festival… At Korean university festival, you can drink alcohol there. I feel like normally Japanese university do not allow to drink alcohol at school festival. Also, Korean university sometimes invite singer and talent.

 

I heard TWICE performed at Korea University

• Yeah, even that famous idol visits and perform at University in Korea. I think Korean university festival is more like a party. But Waseda festival is more like my high school festival. School clubs show their performance. Many students actively participate.

Have you had an experience of school festival in your own country?

 

Really? Then could you share the experience in any kind of festival you experienced in your own country.

• I think it was like a flea market, there are lot of things for sale. It is not just food, but souvenirs, crafts, jewelry, etc. More crowd control in order to make a streamlined and organized event.

 

Are you going to join Waseda festival in this year?

• No, because my circle didn’t get chosen in the lottery system. But I might go see other circle’s performance and event.

 

Are there any kind of cultural differences between two festivals?

• Circles and clubs putting on performances is a unique thing for me. In my country, festivals are generally seasonal or to celebrate the holidays.

 

ここまで3国異なる見方や価値観で早稲田祭について語ってもらったが、筆者個人的に一番「まつり」のイメージが強かったアメリカ出身の生徒が学園祭の経験がないということが一番の驚きだった。早稲田には日本出身の学生だけではなく様々な国々から集まった7000以上の外国出身の学生が在籍しており、その数は年々増え続けているということも頭の隅に置いておくと今年の早稲田祭が少し違ったものになるかもしれない。

母国で学園祭の経験はありますか？

• はい、高校のときにあります。でも学園祭というよりカーニバルのような感じでした。

 

カーニバルのような感じというのはどういうことでしょうか？

• 学園祭は本来チャリティのために行われるもので、全ての学園祭はお金を集めるという目標を持っていると思います。時々マジックショーがあったりもします。学園祭の規模は本当に大きいです。

 

何か食べものもありますか？

• はい、ポップコーンがすごく人気で、あとはアイスクリームもです。

 

早稲田祭はシンガポールの学園祭と比べてどのように違いますか？

• 早稲田祭では本当にたくさん食べ物があるのとパフォーマンスの時間がしっかり決まっているという点で違いを感じます。教室もとても日本的だと思います。別の教室に行けば違うクラブやサークルがいますよね。メイドカフェなどカフェがあるところも他の国にはないし、とても日本的だと思います。

 

今年の早稲田祭には参加しますか？

• わかりません。でも去年はSesSionのパフォーマンスを見に行ったので、今年も見に行くかもしれません。

あなたの国で学園祭を経験したことがありますか？

• はい、高校で。私の高校はたくさんのクラブがあったので、学園祭は生徒の活動を奨励するためものでした。なので、それぞれのクラブがしてきたことを披露する機会でした。

 

お聞きした感じ日本の高校の学園祭ととても似ていると思います。生徒たちはお金を稼いだりするのですか？

• カフェのようなものはやったことがありませんが、募金集めはしました。飲み物やお菓子を売ったりしていて……。そうですね、学園祭はお金を集めるためのものでもあったと思います。

 

今年の早稲田祭に参加しますか？

• サークルに入ってないのでわかりません。ただ行って楽しむかもしれないです。

 

２つの祭りを比べて、何か文化的な違いはありますか？

• ２つの国の大学祭を比べるとすれば……韓国の大学祭ではお酒を飲むことができます。通常日本の大学ではアルコール類を飲むことが許されていないですよね。あと、韓国の大学祭では有名な歌手やタレントを招いたりすることもあります。

 

以前TWICEが高麗大学でパフォーマンスをしたというのを聞いたことがあります

• そうですね、韓国の大学ではそれくらい有名なアイドルでも大学を訪れてパフォーマンスをすることがあります。韓国の大学祭はなんかもっと祭りというよりパーティのようなものの気がします。でも早稲田祭は私の高校の学園祭に近いです。サークルやクラブがパフォーマンスをしたり。たくさんの生徒が積極的に参加するところとか。

• フリーマーケットのようなものでたくさんのものが売られています。お土産や手作りのもの、宝石など色々なものがあります。よりまとまっていて人の流れがスムーズなフェスティバルにするために参加者はより誘導されます。

 

今年の早稲田祭に参加しますか？

• 私のサークルは抽選で外れてしまったので参加しません。でも他のサークルのパフォーマンスやイベントは見に行くかもしれません。

 

あなたの国の祭りと早稲田祭の間に何か文化的な違いはありますか？

• 私の国では一般的に祭りは季節的なものや休日を祝うものなので、早稲田祭ではサークルやクラブがパフォーマンスをするのが私にとってはユニークだな、と思います。
